New features in Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 Virtual Machine Manager 2008

Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 introduces a number of improvements to support the virtual infrastructure management.

Live Migration
The most significant increase in VMM 2008 R2 is support for Windows Server 2008 R2 Live Migration. Live Migration allows you to move virtual machines between Hyper-V hosts without
downtime and reduces planned downtime associated with maintenance routine system. Live Migration works with Performance Resource Optimization (PRO) feature that can create a dynamic IT environment, automatically reallocating workloads virtual machine based on the use of resources and available capacity. In addition, VMM 2008 R2 supports live migration queue, this improvement now allows you to define multiple live migrations and execute one after another in sequence without waiting for the current migration program to complete.

Clustered Shared Volumes Support for Third Party and CFS Cluster
shared volumes (CSV) is a new feature in Windows Server 2008 R2 that provides Live Migration support. CSV virtual infrastructure improves Hyper-V enables multiple computers to access multiple virtual machines simultaneously on a single LUN. CSV also increases support live migration, allowing individual virtual machines to be moved to different hosts without affecting other virtual machines running on that machine. CSV is no need to move the virtual machine and drag the files from the hard drive to another LUN.
addition, unlike the previous model requires storage LUN virtual machine, the new CSV storage permits multiple virtual machine files to be stored in the same LUN, making storage management a lot easier. VMM 2008 R2 can also detect third-party Clustered File Systems, such as Sanbolic. Quick

& # Storage Migration 160; & # 160; Storage Quick Migration enables an administrator to move a virtual machine, storage or even a different LUN to a different host, while the virtual machine runs, both with minimal downtime. Normally, the downtime required for quick storage migration is less than 2 minutes, although the actual amount of downtime depends on the virtual machine, activity level during the move. In addition, VMM 2008 R2 can now take advantage of VMware, as is characteristic of VMotionTM to move VMware virtual machines to different storage locations without downtime. Migration is especially fast storage useful for customers taking advantage of the new CSV feature in Windows Server 2008 R2.

Hot-Add and Removal of Storage
Hot-Add and Removal of Storage reduces planned downtime associated with adding disk storage for their virtual infrastructure to accommodate increased storage needs. The Hot-Add and Removal of Storage in VMM 2008 R2 enables an administrator to add and delete a virtual machine VHD running, without service interruption. Maintenance Mode

The new role of Maintenance Mode in VMM 2008 R2 enables an administrator to specify who will perform maintenance on a Hyper-V host. For example, if the Live Migration is configured on the machine, then all active virtual machines are migrated outside the host available on the Hyper-V hosts during the maintenance period. If live migration is not available, then it saves the state of all virtual machines on the host.

Rapid Provisioning
Rapid Provisioning Role in VMM 2008 R2 enables an administrator to deploy a new virtual machine without needing to copy the virtual hard disk (VHD) files over the network. In contrast, the virtual machine VHD files copied to the backend, and WWW, are used as a template feature to customize the guest operating system. The template includes the operating system response file that allows users to quickly customize the virtual machine at startup. Rapid Provisioning is done through PowerShell scripts.

Host Compatibility Checks One of the requirements for Live Migration is that all hosts must have compatible processors. To enable Live Migration can work without problems, each Hyper-V host processors must use the same manufacturer and must be on the same processor family. For example, you can not set if it is Live Migration using an AMD processor and the other host is using an Intel processor. The new center will feature compatibility check validates that each host processors used in Hyper-V are supported for Live Migration.
